Indigenous people play an important role in shaping Iowa’s history and its current culture and society. Over 20,000 Native persons from all over North America live in Iowa, where 10% of the population is 65 or older. Establishing an education and training program aimed at integrating Age-Friendly Health Systems (AFHS) and dementia-friendly care into Indigenous health settings in partnership with state GWEPs and Tribal, Tribal Organizations, Underserved and/or Rural (TTOUR) sites strengthens and maintains a supportive workforce with the knowledge and skill to provide care to older Indigenous adults. Fostering culturally responsive, age-friendly care through partnerships and collective collaborative approaches promotes an inclusive environment where Indigenous people across Iowa can age in place and thrive.
Minnesota
The purpose of the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program is to work in collaboration with community partners in educating and training the healthcare and supportive workforces to care for the older adults of Minnesota. Our goal in doing this is to provide Age-Friendly (AF) and Dementia-Friendly (DF) care to older adults in integrated geriatrics and primary care sites located at tribal, tribal organizational, underserved, and rural (TTOUR) settings in the state of Minnesota.

Virginia
The Virginia Geriatric Education Center (VGEC) operates a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) that partners with tribal communities, including the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, to deliver age-friendly, culturally competent healthcare and support for Indigenous older adults.
The program utilizes the 4Ms Framework (Mentation, Mobility, Medications, What Matters) to provide training and long-term care support directly to medically underserved tribal and rural communities.

Partnering with the Chickahominy Indian Tribe to Promote Age-Friendly Care – Virginia Geriatric Education Center GWEP
The Virginia Geriatric Education Center (VGEC) GWEP is partnering with the Chickahominy Indian Tribe in Virginia to promote Age-Friendly Care for tribal elders. This case study shares the journey of embarking on relationship building and collaboration with the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, including establishing relationships with tribal leaders and staff, being present in the community for pow-wows and other events, conducting an age-friendly needs assessment with tribal elders, offering culturally adapted educational opportunities identified as important by the elders, and hiring a tribal citizen to join their GWEP team.
The activities have generated positive impact and support coalition building with tribal nations. Currently, tribal leaders and elders are co-creating and delivering, with the VGEC GWEP, a video-based curriculum to train health care professionals and students about the history, culture and meaning of health and wellness in the tribal community.
