Rural Underserved Projects

Iowa’s aging rural population is increasingly underserved and more diverse, creating a critical need for leadership in geriatric training. Key challenges facing the rural healthcare workforce include a grave shortage of health professionals trained in geriatrics, an inadequate infrastructure for training to meet the growing need, and insufficient patient access to geriatric care expertise. This section addresses workforce challenges by mobilizing sustainable, high-quality geriatric care and training across our state, with a focus on reaching further into rural and underserved areas. New strategies embracing the principles of Age-Friendly Health Systems (AFHS) and Dementia Friendly Communities will maximize patient and family engagement and improve health outcomes for older adults. Focusing on creating and strengthening new and existing partnerships to support and implement critical public health initiatives will create a healthier Iowa that prioritizes older adults.
